The model
How a council works
- One or two a year
- This is not a programme with cohorts. Gary takes on a small number of long engagements, and turns down considerably more than he accepts.
- Built around one question
- Every council begins with the thing the person or institution actually wants to leave behind - and works backwards from there rather than forwards from a curriculum.
- Music is part of the method
- Original work is composed for the engagement. Not as a keepsake at the end, but as the way the room is moved while the work is being done.
- The commitment
- $100K and upward, over a term measured in seasons rather than sessions. The specific shape is set in conversation, because no two of these have been alike.
Whether the launch action is an application, an inquiry, or a direct conversation is still to be decided. For now, the safest first step is a conversation.

Who is this actually for?
Founders, families, foundations and institutions at a point where the question has stopped being how to grow and started being what to leave. If that framing sounds abstract, this is probably not the year for it.
Is it coaching?
No. Coaching improves how someone operates. This is closer to commissioning a body of work - with the person or institution as its subject.
What happens on a first conversation?
An hour, no material, no deck. Gary listens for whether there is something here worth a year of both your lives. Most conversations end with a recommendation to do something smaller instead.
Why is there no application form?
Because whether this opens as an application, an inquiry, or an introduction is still being decided. Until it is, a conversation is the honest first step.
